Cupping is a treatment that involves placing glass or silicon “cups” on the skin to create a suction. The cups can then be moved up and down the back or neck, for example, to release muscle and fascial tension, and to increase proper circulation of blood and fluids. Facial cupping is a more gentle but just as moving treatment for the face and neck, often after a facial acupuncture treatment. Cupping may be used to relieve symptoms related to acute illnesses such as colds and fevers. Cupping can also be done all over the body to invigorate the flow of Qi, relieve tension and/or pain and help balance the body. It is often used for muscle pain, congested fluids, myofascial trigger points, acne, an simply to release the tension so many of us have in our shoulders and backs. Guasha is similar to cupping but quicker and involves using a variety of flat tools on the skin. Guasha can be used on the back for stiff necks, frozen shoulders, insomnia and anxiety, breast pain or chest tightness, coughing, skin conditions, upper respiratory infections, muscle spasms, systemic inflammation and stress to name a few. Facial guasha is incorporated into facial rejuvenation treatments but also used for sinus congestion, headaches, TMJ, eye strain, stress and insomnia. In TCM terms, both cupping and guasha are used to move Qi and Blood while releasing pathogenic influences that cause the pain in the first place such as cold, heat, dampness, wind or traumatic injury.
